The Next Phase of Community Recovery
As recovery from the May 7 tornadoes continues, United Way SCMI and Kalamazoo Community Foundation (KZCF) are collaborating to lend our shared strengths to relief efforts. We are working alongside partners at Gryphon Place and 2-1-1 as they identify community needs and determine how best to mobilize resources. To contribute to the overall recovery effort, you can donate to the Community Urgent Relief Fund (CURF) at KZCF by clicking the button below.
If you wish to make a grant suggestion from your KZCF Donor Advised Fund (DAF) to the Community Urgent Relief Fund, you can do so via Kalamazoo Connect. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.

UPDATE May 17, 2024:
United Way of South Central Michigan and Kalamazoo Community Foundation have begun issuing grant dollars to nonprofits and public entities providing critical recovery services to impacted individuals and households in Kalamazoo County.
- Dollars disbursed: $132,206
- Dollars raised: $200,000+
- Number of agencies awarded grants: 5
How dollars have been spent:
- $115,000: Direct cash assistance to individuals or households who have experienced a loss of income or loss of property directly related to the tornadoes
- $5,706: Costs associated with disaster response case management or volunteer management
- $11,500: Assistance with repairing or replacing critical necessities not covered by insurance (i.e., furniture, clothing, appliances or a vehicle)
